An allergy is simply an immune response by the body to a certain substance that the body has become hypersensitive to. It’s important to know that allergies are a common thing for people to experience, and that most allergies are treatable! Allergies to a certain substance can appear at any age and sometimes they even disappear and reappear later in life. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction include runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, head congestion, chronic colds, dizziness, and fatigue.
You may have spring allergies
If you normally don’t have spring allergies, you may not even know that you have them! Spring allergies are typically triggered by pollen which is secreted by trees and plants during the spring in order to fertilize other trees and plants. If you inhale pollen and you’re allergic to it, your immune system will try to flush it out and begin releasing antibodies. When these antibodies come into contact with an allergen they secrete a chemical called Histamine. Histamines are what cause your nose to become runny as well as most of the other symptoms from allergies. An uncomfortable itching sensation in your eyes or are chronic runny nose running during the spring time are signs you may have an allergy to pollen. A visit with a Broward Sinus Doctor/ allergy specialist will help you determine what the source of your allergy is.
There are a few different tests our Broward Sinus Doctors & allergy specialists can run to find out exactly what is triggering your allergy symptoms, but two of the most common are an allergy skin test and an ImmunoCAP assay.
Allergy skin testing helps to identify the specific allergens that are triggering your reaction, and allows the physician to diagnose and treat your allergy problem. Allergy skin testing is performed by applying several different allergens to the skin of your forearm with a skin based applicator and under the skin using a very small injection device that is relatively pain free (the pain is compared to a tight pinch). If there is sensitivity to a particular allergen, a welt will appear at the testing site. Our doctors will then recommend the proper treatment for that particular allergy.
For patients who cannot undergo skin testing for some reason, we also offer in-vitro allergy testing (blood test). An ImunnoCAP assay involves taking your blood to measure allergen- specific IgE, which is a protein that appears on blood tests in people with allergies.
Once our physician discovers what you’re allergic to, they can help you decide which course of treatment will help to alleviate your symptoms. Some of the possible treatment options your doctor can offer you include:
avoid the offending allergens
Prescribe different medications including Antihistamines, Oral or Nasal Decongestants, Oral Steroids, Steroid Sprays that could relieve or cure your symptoms (Pharmacotherapy)
A series of allergy shots (Immunotherapy)
Sublingual Immunotherapy (Drops- painless quick & easy to take)
