Believe it or not it’s actually fairly easy to tell the difference between a cold and an allergy. They do have symptoms that overlap but they both have their own unique symptoms as well.
One way to tell the difference is the onset of symptoms. Allergy symptoms come on quickly, usually immediately after you encounter the allergen you are allergic to such as pollen or dust mites. The sneezing and/or congestion is usually pretty sudden and can be severe. Allergy symptoms also disappear almost as quickly as they come on. Typically they go away when you move to an environment where the allergen is not present such as going inside verses being outside.
Colds tend to come on more slowly. Cold symptoms typically take a few days to settle in and gradually get worse. The recovery time from a cold is also much slower unfortunately. Allergy symptoms can come and go within a few hours whereas cold symptoms can linger for 10 days or longer.
Allergies Symptoms typically cause:
itchy and watery eyes
stuffy or runny nose
scratchy or sore throat
cough from postnasal drip
Cold Symptoms are often associated with:
Runny or stuffy nose
Slight body aches or a mild headache
Generally feeling unwell (malaise)
The good news is allergies are easily treatable once you identify the allergen causing the allergic reaction and colds only last for a little while. At Broward Sinus Doctors we specialize in allergy testing and allergy treatments. We have several options for treatment such as sublingual immunotherapy.
